Folding Flats:

The 3 locations were painted on flats that were made in a more traditional style. Muslin was stretched out on the frame, glued around the edges, and stapled in. Once the glue dried, the flats were starched; after that dried, the staples were removed and we back painted all the flats to prevent any light from accidentally shining through. Each location had 4 walls made from 2 foldable pieces. The hinges were hidden by a Dutchman seam.

Different Stones:

Several locations needed rough, dark stone walls. Once the base was scumbled and spattered on, stones were chalked in and the mortar was painted in. A cut line was put around the underside of the each stone, but no highlight because of the darkness of the design. The fireplace was the only 3-dimensional stone. We carved stones out of foam, painted and glued them in place, and filled in the mortar gaps with TotalWall plaster, which was painted the same mortar color.
