I started out with creating a grid on the original image, and then replicating that grid on my flat with string to cartoon out the image. Once cartooned in charcoal, I flogged it.

First I sprayed in the sky color, then worked from the background to the foreground. As I went, I added texture with various tools. Once the whole painting reached the same level, I fine tuned it with more texture and color washes.
