I started out with creating a grid on the original image, and then replicating that grid on my flat with string to cartoon out the image. Once cartooned in charcoal, I flogged it.
The project was to change the face of the original Mucha painting to be someone else's face.
First I painted the background and steadily worked to the foreground in washes. Then I started adding in the outlines and fine-tuning it. For the face, I drew out the face of my model on tracing paper with a lot of detail and shading to make sure it looked right, and then transferred the line drawing onto my project to fill in with paint.
