I started out with creating a grid on the original image, and then replicating that grid on my flat to cartoon out the image. Once cartooned in charcoal, I flogged it and redrew most of the lines with Sharpie.

Then I painted in the base coat of the statue and columns and spattered them. The edges were redefined when I filled in the rest of the background's base. I did have to adjust the color of the lower background; I thought it was too dark, so I re-scumbled it and textured it with a natural sponge.

Then I just carefully added in shade, shadow, and finally highlight.
