Translucent Drop
Finished Project
Process
To prepare the muslin, I starched it 5 times: 3 on front, and 2 on back. Then I applied an acrylic sealer to the back.
The front sky was painted with very watery paint and spray bottles. Then the mountains were sketched in and carefully painted, knowing where would be opaque or translucent.
Holding the front up to the light, I traced the mountains onto the back and painted selected spots with opaque paint so that light wouldn't come through.
For the night sky, I used pebbles as a masking; it blocked out wherever I didn't want a certain color, and a light scattering of it made up the stars. Various colors were sprayed, pebbles were moved, and adjustments were made until it was done. Opaque paint was applied around the edges to feather it from black to luminescent space. Then all the pebbles were swept up.
