The Floor:

The floor was supposed to look like really old stone, so we first scumbled the colors on with rollers to create a base texture. To add more texture, we coated rags in other colors and slapped them on the floor in a linear direction.  After mortar was painted in, we added a little more texture with natural sponge rollers, and then aged it with raw umber and black washes.

Plaster:

Every wall had plaster on it, so that it would look like plaster was chipping off the wall to reveal stone and brick underneath it. We applied TotalWall plaster, scumbled a few base colors, then went over it with a white wash. To finish, we aged it with raw umber and black washes.

Old Planks:

Throughout the set there was old wood, which was made by distressing the wood with blades, chains, and sanders. A light gray base was scumbled, and then we saturated the wood with a black and raw umber wash.

Stone and Brick:

The walls of the set were either a stone or brick finish. For both, we did a base scumble, textured with rag rolling or natural sponages, marked in the mortar, aged it with raw umber and black washes, and then added a shadow to create 3-dimensionality.
